2D to 3D Piece

Statement:
For my 2D to 3D piece I wanted to create an overall pattern with the geometric figures I created from the wall map relief installation. I wanted it to be a concise 2D piece. I love geometric patterns and having them fill the whole space was key. I could see this being used as a background image or wall poster. The simple and clean all black and white pattern was what I was going for as well. Overall a wonderful 2D composition is created.

Mimento

FINAL

IN PROGRESS

Dimension: approx. 2.5" height  x  5" length x  3" width
Materials: tracing paper, water

Statement:
I created the boob by wetting tracing paper and forming the shape in my hands. I then let the piece dry out in my car for several days to soak up the moisture.
I created this moment piece to represent a single breast. The boob was to represent my moms battle with breast cancer. She was diagnosed my sophomore year of high school and ended up having to fight for her life. I create the "ideal" boob which is what normal women every day complain about. Women never seem to be happy with the size, shape, form, or overall appearance of their boobs. It is something most women take for granted. Whereas women who are battling breast cancer have their female parts taken from them without any say. These women who are fighting the disease only crave to be normal and have the "ideal" boob, where they see them as a treasure, and regular women take them for granted.

Geometric Installation - Map Relief

FINAL

IN PROGRESS

Measurements: approx. 3' height x 6' length x 7" depth
Materials: sharpie, black duck tape, thick white paper, foam board

Statement:
I was extremely inspired by a Japanese artist who created a similar geometric installation to mine. She used all different objects and shapes to create this illusion of 3D and 2D pieces coming off the wall. I wanted to recreate this same sort of illusion with my own wall installation. I used the thick white paper and cut out a multitude of different triangles, ranging in size and shape. I did the same with the foam board and also began adding different several patterns to each piece to start creating the overall appearance of movement. I used the arch in the art building as my guideline for the formation of the installation. The arch created a whole new level of movement to my overall piece. I also used a variety of triangle sizes, especially super tiny ones near the very top of the installation. This was to give the illusion that the triangles could be coming from either direction. They were either flowing up and disappearing or coming down and meeting you eye to eye. This added to the overall meaning of the piece which was to represent life and how you never really know what direction it is going to go. You may want to plan and map all of life out but in reality you cannot predict what is going to happen.

Balsa Wood - Three Small Sculptures

FINAL

IN PROGRESS

Measurements: wood glue sculpture: approx. 9.4" length x 11.5" height x 3.2" width
flower sculpture: approx. 8.7" length x 7.3" height 5.1" width
square sculpture: approx. 6.6" length x 7.9" height x 2.4 width
Medium: balsa wood, wood glue, hot glue, clear packing tape, pins, paper, wood sticks

Artist Statement:
To create the three balsa wood structures I really expanded my tools by stepping into the woodshop area. I used the wood shop to create the stand for my "scale" three flower thing, the layers on the wood glue sculpture, and the cubes and all three sides of the square sculpture. Using the woodshop tools gave each piece a more polished finish to them.

For the square sculpture I used a plethora of materials to create space. On one side of the sculpture I used clear packing tape, pins, and wood shavings. On the next side I used hot glue to create a whispy  web. On the next side I used the woodshop to perfectly round out 5 cubes. For the last side I used a piece or rounded balsa wood and then braided a piece of masking tape to drape over the side.

For the wood glue sculpture I used multiple materials to create texture. I started by creating three tiers of balsa wood. I then used the thick wood glue to drape over each tier to create a dripping effect.  I finished off the piece by including a web of hot glue on the backside of the piece.

For the final sculpture, the flower sculpture, I used materials to create scale. I used balsa wood as the stand, and rounded out the sides in the woodshop to give the piece a more organic feel. I then created the idea of scale by creating three paper flowers, all different sizes. I love the organic nature these flowers ended up providing to the viewer. I then finished the piece by delicately draping hot glue in between the flowers to in a way represent dew drops. I ended up including hot glue in each sculpture to bring them together and form a cohesive series.

Masked Identity Final Series

FINAL SERIES

IN PROGRESS

Dimensions: approx. 3 ft height x 1.8 ft length x 1 ft depth
Materials: wire, tulle

Statement:
I created this mask and series to represent the struggle of being weighed down and held back by so much, represented on the right side with the tangle of wire, and then the process of letting go and being free is represented with the white tulle on the left side. I created the tulle on the left to represent a lung which all signifies being able to breathe again. As art students we have all been so stressed the last few weeks in preparation for our finals. We've all been losing sleep, stressed out of our minds, not being able to do anything else and being held back by our responsibilities. I created this mask to represent that struggle. We become so held back and weighed down by all of our responsibilities until we turn in all of our finals and can finally breathe again.

My renaissance symbol was water. I photographed my model outside of the water first and wrapped her in tulle to portray the struggle during finals. I also purposefully made these photos black and white to have a visible contrast with the in-color water photos. Which as a result created a greater effect visually and showed the rebirthing after being done with finals. In the water photos the model is finally able to breathe again and even begins taking the mask off which signifies that she is done with finals and her responsibilities have been lifted. I also included gold flakes which could be another renaissance symbol that express bright and cheerful feelings in the color water photos to add to her feeling of being free and calm once again.

Leopard Soap Sculpture

 FINAL

IN PROGRESS

Measurements: white: 6.5" length x 3.4" height x 2.4" width
yellow: 5.6" length x 4.4" height x 2.1" width
materials: soap

For the soap carvings, my animal was a leopard. I did not include ears due to the fear of them breaking off before they were turned in. I included a wire tail on the white leopard but it was more difficult than I expected to recover the tail with the liquified soap bar mixture, but the wire did make it easy to form the curved angle of the tail. I used metal scraping tools to take away large chunks of the sculptures. I found that adding the last bit of detail like the fur, the eyes and face, and the toes made the soap sculpture seem the most life like in the end.
